I dusted off my magic carpet, and took it for a ride. Then I realized that flying carpets are more fun with two people not one. I dusted off my genie lamp and gave it a gentle rub. Out popped my genie and he granted me three wishes. Here’s what they were:
1.) To know why my first love never loved me back.
2.) To return to the innocence of childhood.
3.) To remember what it feels like to “Make believe” and actually feel like make believe is real.
The genie said he could grant them all in one fell swoop. He rolled up his sleeves and got busy to work. I sat on the magic carpet, flying past Jupiter and Mars. I readied myself to witness the fulfillment of three lost dreams. Instead of snapping his fingers and erasing my worry, the genie sat on the carpet with me and told me an allegory.
He said: An itsy bitsy spider crawled up my water spout and bit my blue bird on the neck. “Why did you bite my bird”? itsy bitsy spider I asked. “Because he should’ve known that I’m a spider and that’s what spiders do. Tell your bird not to be so naive next time. Tell your bird that if she doesn’t watch out for other spiders, she’ll get bit again and again. I did her a favor by biting and leaving” said itsy bitsy. And with that, the rain washed him away.

I closed my window and there was a bumble bee on my honey container. “Don’t take all my honey. It makes my tea so sweet. And what if I have company that wants tea?” I asked my big bumble bee. “Too bad said the bumble bee. They’ll have to bring their own honey. I’m tired of watching you give your honey away. Call this thievery of mine safe keeping. Stop giving away your sweetness to those blood thirsty bastards” said my bee. I took the advice of the wise old bee and went and sat down on my doorstep with a bit of a frown. There were three little birds singing “don’t worry about a thing, because every little thing is gonna be alright.” I picked up their tune and it put some pep in my step.
I walked to work in the sunshine of the morning and listened as the bushes gossiped about who creeped and crept the night before. My obsessions and compulsions got the best of me when I tried to remember if I unplugged my Magic Toaster. I remembered I did because after my toast was cooked and buttered, he winked and wished me well, said he’d never leave me lonely. I would always be able to count on the magic toaster. I double checked my brief case for what I’d be showcasing at Show and Tell and out popped my wildest dream. I struggled with the dream to shove it away to the bottom of the case.
When the pedestrian walk light signaled, I half walked, half stumbled across the street with my dream writhing in my right hand. A gentleman walked by singing “Please Mr. Postman” I jumped into his song mid-stanza then we switched to “Mr.Sandman”. I made it to work all in one piece. I put my genie bottle on my desk and rubbed it for good luck. The genie popped out saying “Your wishes came true but not in the manner in which you thought. Remember the itsy bitsy and that pesky bee. They told you why your first love never loved you back. Remember the three little birds because everything is going to be alright. You will bump into some people who you can sing to and they will make your day. And finally, since you’ve believed in me, you have given birth to your own childhood innocence reborn. You didn’t need me as badly as you thought. But it was my pleasure. Never stop believing.”
